Higham Library ceramic pebble fountain

We were commissioned to build a 'Ceramic Pebble Fountain' for the courtyard at Higham Library in Kent. The fountain is built from a combination of second hand red bricks and bright, glazed stoneware ceramics. Several decorative ceramic floor tiles are also set into the brick paving surrounding the fountain.

While we were building the basic fountain structure and fabricating the ceramic pebbles and tiles; decoration was painted, using glaze stains, onto the clay stones by Higham residents during art workshops. We were keen for people of all ages and interests to take part in this project, so that the library fountain is truly representative of the people of Higham. No two people painted in the same way and we are pleased with the different designs.

The theme for the pebbles is organic forms, such as flowers and leaves. During the workshops we painted the plant designs onto the stones with colourful 'under glaze stains'. The stains are easy and enjoyable to use. Experience was not necessary - just enthusiasm
