Before and After

Bronze Plaques

The site was opened in 1995 by Professor Patrick Nuttgens

The project was organised by Chris Cowen of Public Arts and Paul Bailey of Kirklees Metropolitan Council

Site Foreman – Glen Armitage

Batley Bats is a 10 metre high gothic arch that we built in the early 1990s. The aim of this project was to completely redevelop the site and build a ‘landmark' sculpture to draw attention to the surrounding area and in particular the ‘historically listed', Victorian 'shoddy' warehouses.

The designs for the scheme were developed during a 3 month residency at a nearby primary school. Local residents, businesses and special interest groups also made a strong impact on the design during an extensive period of consultation.

Our design was for the whole site, mostly completed in York stone, included pavement widening, improved access, raised planting beds, re-paving, a 'Bat Bench' and a 'Bat Grotto'.

We produced a large proportion of the arch including the two bats at the top during an 8 month residency at the architectural ceramic factory Shaws of Darwen. Click here to find out more about this residency.
