Making a Place is a landmark sculpture for Bede Park, Leicester. It resembles a large rolled up carpet, with a map of central Leicester painted around it. The concept arose from the way that the new park transformed a brown field site (formerly a scrap yard) into a city park, with housing, offices, shops, pub, children's playground and playing fields. It was as though the landscape was unraveled all at once, like a giant carpet. Well known Leicester landmarks are represented by two rows of pictures that surround 'Making a Place'. Including the castle gates of Leicester Prison. These celebrated features of Leicester are taken out of the city and painted (using ceramic glaze stains) in a countryside setting in the style of 'Roses and Castles' (A traditional form of decorating canal narrow boats). We were strongly influenced by the presence of the nearby Grand Union Canal.
