Sculpting 'Making a Place' For Bede Park, Leicester

The images below show the first stages of sculpting 'Making a Place', the ceramic map sculpture at Bede Park, Leicester.  The original plaster model was sculpted at our studio, 10% larger than the finished size of the piece to allow for shrinkage.. It was coated in shellac and then cast in 180 sections using plaster of Paris. Each plaster mould formed a ceramic tile/component. The glazed ceramic pieces form courses, the interior was carefully filled with dense ceramic blocks and sharp sand mortar.
