Thirteen poems are set into the red clay block paving as part of the Tiger Moth Square Project in Irlam, Salford. All the poems were created by people living locally; we worked with children in nearby schools and held an open poetry competition for adults in the area. We asked people to write personal poems, about themselves, their friends and their experience of living in Irlam. We are particularly pleased with the range of poems and ages of the poets, the youngest aged 7 wrote the poem above ‘The Shoe.’

The clay tiles are terracotta, with a clear gloss glaze. The imagery is carved into the clay tiles and piped with liquid clay which stands in relief, to create a non-slip and hard wearing surface. They are surrounded by a row of granite setts. Each poem is made up of 16 tiles and is approximately 1 metre square.
