Tollgate Neighborhood in Croydon has a complicated lay-out and is notoriously difficult to navigate, especially for visitors. We were asked by Croydon Council and Tollgate Steering Group to design a series of permanent directional signs in a style and character that  would give definition to the area. Tollgate is surrounded by park and woodland with  something of a 'village' feel. We wanted to reflect this character and chose this theme of gardens and wildlife  throughout the signs.

We worked with Sally Aitken, Croydon's Arts Development Officer and the residents' steering group to run children's design workshops and produce the designs. Two 'village' Tollgate motif signs mark the entrances to the neighborhood, while a combination of birds, squirrels, a 'Tudor' birdhouse and a flowerpot make up the other seven. The signs are made from robust galvanized steel and were fabricated by  Scott Associates of Glasgow. We hand-painted the signs using a special resilient paint system from Dacrylate Paints.
